Form W-4
Federal Withholding Allowance Certificate

What is Form W-4?

Form W-4 is the “Employee Withholding Allowance Certificate” for federal withholding.

Why is Form W-4 used?
Form W-4 is used to determine the personal income tax withholding status for employees to ensure that the
appropriate amount of Federal taxes are withheld from their earnings.

How do I determine the appropriate amount of withholding to be withheld?

  • Residents for Tax Purposes (U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, Refugees, Asylees, and Foreign Nationals who meet the Substantial Presence Test.): Access the Internal Revenue Service website and calculate your withholding utilizing the “Withholding Calculator” at http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html.

  • Nonresidents for Tax Purposes (Foreign Nationals): Generally, nonresidents for tax purposes are only able to claim a Single Marital Status and a maximum of one (1) Allowance. Exceptions include citizens of the following countries: Canada, India, Mexico and South Korea. These four countries are allowed a Single marital status and can claim the number of allowances that meet their tax liability.
