Allowance Certificate
Form W-4 is the
“Employee Withholding Allowance Certificate” for federal
withholding.
Why is Form W-4 used?
Form W-4 is used to determine the personal income tax
withholding status for employees to ensure that the
appropriate amount of Federal taxes are withheld from their
earnings.
How do I determine
the appropriate amount of withholding to be withheld?

Residents for Tax Purposes
(U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, Refugees, Asylees,
and Foreign Nationals who meet the Substantial Presence
Test.): Access the Internal Revenue Service website and
calculate your withholding utilizing the “Withholding
Calculator” at
http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html.

Nonresidents for Tax
Purposes (Foreign Nationals): Generally, nonresidents
for tax purposes are only able to claim a Single Marital
Status and a maximum of one (1) Allowance. Exceptions
include citizens of the following countries: Canada,
India, Mexico and South Korea. These four countries are
allowed a Single marital status and can claim the number
of allowances that meet their tax liability.

Residents for Tax
Purposes: you may update your withholding
electronically at “At Your Service Online” at http://atyourserviceonline.ucop.edu/ayso/,
OR with your department’s Payroll Representative.

Nonresidents for Tax
Purposes: access GLACIER at www.online-tax.net to
update your withholding.
Print, sign and date your revised documents and mail
them to:
