Training Classes Offered by UCLA

UCLA offers courses to help staff understand various aspects of tax issues at the University.  These courses are offered by various departments throughout the year.  For a list of courses which deal with these issues, please see below:
Alien Information

This class will assist those who are responsible for processing forms for aliens, as well as those who invite foreign visitors to campus.  The following topics will be discussed:

      Forms that aliens must complete
      Payments to aliens on various types of visas
      Withholding taxes

 

FICA Tax Workshop

This class is open to all University employees who are interested in learning about Social Security deductions.  It is strongly recommended for departmental administrators who are assigned the responsibility for processing or reviewing online employee personnel and benefit transactions.  this class is designed to provide information about Social Security coding and deductions and their relationship to UC policies and programs.  The following topics will be discussed:

      Determination of Eligibility 
      Overall history of Social Security
      Review of adjustments and special situations
      Review of the Process at UCLA (from point of deduction to W2
         Statement of Earnings)

 

Sales and Use Tax Workshop

This course will provide participants a general understanding of California's Sales and Use Tax Law and its implications as it relates to the University as both a purchaser and seller of tangible personal property.  Topics covered in this workshop include:

      Audit Issues and Documentation Requirements
      California Retailers vs. Out-of-State Retailers
      Major Exemptions
      Overview of Sales vs. Use Tax
      Purchases and Sales for Resale (Resale Certificates)
      Tax rates (including District Taxes)
      University Reference Materials

 

Tax Related Information for Graduate Student Fellowships and Appointments

This course provides a comprehensive review of the policies and procedures related to processing fellowship payments and Academic Apprentice personnel (AAP) appointments for UCLA graduate students.  Topics include:

      Academic Apprentice Personnel Manual 
      Departmental fellowship accounting and processing
      Distinguishing fellowship and compensation payments
      Eligibility issues and concerns regarding the payment and appointment
          of graduate students
      Fee remissions accounting and processing
      Graduate Division allocation accounting and processing
      Post-auditing and departmental reporting
